and smiled, but the woman in front of her lowered her eyes. She held a baby on her hip and a toddler by the hand. She spoke into the baby’s head. She needed a lawyer. Today. Luz wasn’t surprised by the young mom’s timid behavior. Like others who visited the Family Resource Center in Lake Forest, CA, she would need help with an urgent issue like immigration, mental health, Medicaid, or food stamps. Immigration, Luz guessed. Luz had just begun work as an information and resource specialist through the St. Joseph Worker Program (SJWP), a ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Her college professors might have been surprised at her decision to take this volunteer stint instead of a job in her field of athletic training. But Luz was drawn to service. She had followed her heart. Now, she would have to break it to the woman that attorneys don’t take walk-in appointments. She would have to wait. Luz began to explain when she noticed bruises on the little boy’s arm and face, and had another thought. Maybe she needs more than a lawyer. Steering the family over to a quiet corner, Luz sat down with them. She asked, gently, what was wrong. The woman broke down. Her husband was violent. She was afraid for her children’s lives. “I will never forget her,” Luz says. “I just rubbed her back and handed her tissues. Once she was quiet, I contacted a social worker who got her and the children into a domestic violence shelter that same day. I also contacted a lawyer for her. Five cows, two buffaloes, a few goats, and some chickens roam near the coconut trees that are its main source of income. Mangoes and vegetables also grow there, cultivated by local workers and Sister Ann Celine. Sr. Ann Celine runs the farm for the School Sisters of St. Francis. Purchased by the sisters in 1981 to support their small nearby hospital, the 36-acre tract also supports the families who work there. The farm thrives as long as there is enough water for its needs. When monsoon season ends and irrigation begins in January, however, the holding ponds and borewell become the farm’s exclusive water source. By March, just as temperatures begin to soar over 100 degrees, water becomes scarce. “This area is very, very hot,” Sr. Ann Celine says by phone. “Once you’re out on the farm in the sun, you get very tired. There are no clouds and very little shade from the coconut and mango trees. There is no air conditioning.” An Unexpeccted Ministry The farm was not part of the original picture as the Franciscan sisters arrived in Kanjikode to serve its desperately poor inhabitants. Rather, the sisters went to work supplying the most urgently needed services, including health care. By 1978, they had built the only hospital in town and were treating emergencies ranging from heart attacks to births, while caring for polio-affected children in a special wing. The trouble was, patients could not afford to pay for the service. The sisters looked for a sustainable solution. “The people were so needy, we could not demand payment,” Sr. Ann Celine says. “We did not know how to meet the expenses of the hospital or the payment for the doctors, especially in the surgical and gynecological departments. Finally, by the grace of God, an offer came to us to get a farm.” Assisi Farm – once a hardscrabble home to a few struggling coconut trees – became a reliable if unexpected source of support for Assisi Hospital. “A lot of work needed to be done on the farm, especially with ponds, borewells, plumbing, and repair work,” Sr. Ann Celine says. “God really provided the means and people to help. Eventually, the existing coconut trees started to bring more fruits, and we were able to plant. He had earned frying hamburgers and working for a casino in Reno. It was 1972. He looked at the stack of bills. “Datsun 240Z or grad degree?” he asked himself. He’d always wanted that car. But he knew his life was going nowhere. He packed his bags and headed to Ames, where he ended up driving a beat-up Toyota with tie rods that were shot and an engine that wouldn’t start unless you parked it on a hill and popped the clutch. Mike had chosen the Iowa State geology department sight unseen, a favor the school returned when it accepted him. His undergraduate grades were “not great” and his GRE scores were middling. He wasn’t, he admits, the best prospect. But he knew how to work hard, which put him in good standing with his advisor, chair-emeritus of Iowa State's geological and atmospheric sciences department, Carl Vondra. “Dr. Vondra was tough but fair,” Mike says. “He’s directly responsible for my career.” He was also responsible for the old Toyota. It’s what Mike had to drive for his job at Vondra’s geology field camp in Shell, Wyoming. Despite the hard work, Mike loved most of it. Just 32, she already had two beautiful children, a loving husband, a great job and a happy home. Then she found a lump. Her voice shook as she told me. “My doctor wants me to have a biopsy,” Catherine said on the phone. “But I’m too scared. I just can’t.” Have you ever wanted to do more than say, “I’ll pray for you”? You want to help, but just saying that – no matter how sincere – can sound almost hollow. You long to offer something more tangible. It was the Catholic Day of Action for Immigrant Children on July 18, 2019, in Washington, D.C. The sisters – aged 85 and 90, respectively – were sanguine about it. “You have to do something,” Sr. JoAnn told the Chicago Tribune after their release. “The little bit of discomfort we felt that day is so minimal than what the immigrants go through.” These two Sisters of Mercy know plenty about that. Back home in Chicago, they continue to volunteer at a homeless shelter, visit detained immigrants, participate in weekly prayer vigils and do political advocacy. Being handcuffed and taken into custody? It was not the first time, and may not be the last. “We are brothers and sisters, and it doesn’t make any difference the color of our skin or our religion or the country we come from,” Sr. Pat told the Tribune. “We are our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. She had called her father – a police officer in Des Moines – to let him know she needed help paying her outstanding tuition bill. He paused before he answered. “I’m not sure either.” Olivia was stunned. Scheduled to graduate from ISU in three months, she knew if she couldn’t pay her tuition, she wouldn’t be allowed to graduate. Her younger brother and ISU sophomore, Xavier, wouldn’t be allowed to register for classes. It would be a one-two punch for them both. When financial stress leads to dropping out – studies show it does up to 50 percent of the time – it contributes to an urgent and growing societal problem: skilled jobs are going unfilled across the country. There aren’t enough college graduates to fill them. To make matters worse, college enrollment is down by about 11 percent nationwide and forecast to worsen, courtesy of the “Birth Dearth” triggered by the 2008 recession. Within 10 years, the nation’s economy will suffer a shortfall of 11 million skilled workers. Iowa State’s answer is to address factors beyond the birth rate by attracting more prospective students and by keeping existing students in school through graduation.
